First of all, you gotta understand one important thing: Toyota Tacoma is a mid-size truck, and Toyota Tundra is a full-size truck. Generally speaking, it would be more appropriate to have a fight between Tundra and the aforementioned Hilux. But the thing is, not a lot of people know the Hilux in the United States, and besides – everybody wants to know, who’s better – Tacoma or Tundra. Nobody really cares about pick-up definitions, so, that’s exactly what we’re gonna do today – have a Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Toyota Tundra 2015 comparison. But, before we start rolling with the epic battle, let’s start off with a bit of getting to know each other.
Asia’s Pride And Joy – Toyota Tacoma
Tacoma is Toyota’s second pickup to hit the American soil. It was first introduced to the world (the US, I mean) in 1995 – on February, to be exact – as a substitute for the Hilux, which was being marketed in the States under the somewhat simple name of Toyota Pickup. Yep, Hilux was initially intended for the American market, but the Japanese decided a different turn for the brand – it was sent to conquer the rest of the world, while the brand-new Tacoma was set to win over the market in the States.
Fortunately enough for Toyota, both brands proved to be extremely popular (and profitable, too). A quick comparison of the two: Toyota Tacoma is engineered with greater detail to ride quality, comfort level, handling, and safety over endurance (ruggedness is the more appropriate word) and payload capacity.

We all gotta hand it to the Tacoma – it stood the test of time, and is now more popular and respected, than ever. And although it’s a bit lazy by modern-day standards – the 2015 Toyota Tacoma is largely pretty much the same pick-up that saw the light of day in 2005 (that was the first major redesign of the brand) – it’s still fully packed with all the techy new features, along with all kinds of engineering ideas.
For starters, the 2015 Toyota Tacoma offers two engines to choose from. The basic 4-cyl, 2.7-lit engine delivers good performance and amazing fuel-efficiency. With a total of 159 horsepower, 180 f-lbs of torque, and MPG of 19 in city, and 24 on highways, you’ve got yourself a pretty great mid-size truck. The mightier V6, on the other hand, turns the Tacoma into a wild beast, capable of towing any medium-large trailer out there (6,500 pounds max). If you’ve got the extra cash, then you’ll be the proud owner of 236HP and 266 ft-lbs of torque. The MPG will, of course, drop – 15 in city, and 19 on highways.
Age Over Beauty?
The 2015 Tundra also offers a choice between two engines. You can go either with the 4.6 V8 (that’s the standard), which is paired with a six-speed automatic, and provides 310HP and 327 lb-ft of torque, which is between 6400 and 6,800 pounds (depends on the body style you choose). The Estimated MPG is 15 in city, and 19 on the highways. The 5.7-lit V8 comes standard on the four-wheel drive regular cabs, and all the Limited, Platinum TRD Pro and 1794 trim levels (you can still have it installed on the lower trims).
The transmission is, again, a 6-speed automatic, and the combination produces 381HP and 401 pound feet of torque, with a max of 10,500 pounds. Fuel economy is not that different to the Tacoma’s V6 – 13 in city, and 18 on highways. By the way, the 2015 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro can accelerate from 0 to 60 in 6.7 seconds. This is better than standard, guys.
So, no argument there – in the Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Toyota Tundra 2015 battle of powertrain capabilities, Tundra squashes its opponent. A mid-size truck just can’t compete with a full-size in terms of might.
As I’ve told you briefly before, Tacoma is a bit more comfortable than Tundra. It’s a plus, for sure. But, the thing with trucks is, they don’t always have to provide the highest possible level of comfort. That roughness, that’s natural to all pick-ups is partially the reason why we love them so much in America and Canada. Taking a trip into the wild with your buddies, cruisin’ around the desert near Vegas, while pranking each other and telling crazy stories – that’s a big part of the truck experience that we’re so used to.
I’m not saying your body will be beat up after an hour-long trip, but still, the seats are not as enjoyable as those of a standard Toyota SUV or a family sedan. Tundra is victorious in one important matter – it’s got more room in the interior, more headroom, and the rear seats are really-really big. And, both trucks carry out a simple, not very stylish design.
Space Or Comfort?
In the 2015 Toyota Tacoma Basic Double Cab you’ve got air conditioning, an alloy steering wheel, power door locks, USB/Bluetooth connection, AM/FM Stereo, stability control, fog lights, and a whole bunch of other amazing features, including Toyota’s own Entune system. You’ll get pretty much the same with the 2015 Toyota Tacoma Basic Double Cab.

If you want a bit more comfier ride, go with the Tacoma, if you want more room in the interior (that’s what people usually want form a truck), than you should choose the Tundra brand. If you want both – go with Tundra’s highest trim levels, like TRD Pro or Platinum, and you’ll get all the luxury you could possibly think of in a truck (that’ll cost you some additional money, of course – we’ll talk about that later). The Exterior And Off-Road Activities
The different approaches to styling in the trucks are very noticeable. And not only because of the much bigger and larger Tundra. Even though the 2015 Tundra is not very different from the previous editions, it has been receiving some significant updates on a constant basis, and today it provides a smoother, yet very aggressive look, while the 2015 Tacoma has a not-to-scary, kinda homey feel to it.
The 2015 Tacoma is very maneuver for a truck, and parking won’t cause much problems. I’m not saying that Toyota Tundra 2015 is a clumsy dinosaur, but parking it can sometimes give you headaches, especially if you accidentally scratch another car in the parking lot.
If you thrown in some extra bucks, the 2015 Tacoma will become your best friend in the off-road activities. It’s one of the strongest trucks in the wild nature. Yep, the TRD Pro is arguably the craziest backslapper in the market, and that’s a very big compliment, ladies and gentlemen. The TRD Pro trim for the 2015 Tundra is no joke either; so, it’s more of subjective question, than a practical one.
Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Toyota Tundra 2015 – How Much?
So, for the basic Double Cab 2015 Toyota Tacoma you’ll need about 21-24K (that’s for the lowest trim level). The TRD Pro starts at 35K, and can climb up to just under 40K.
The SR trim level of the 2015 Toyota Tundra will cost you 28-30K. The Platinum and 1794 trim levels are starting at around 45K, and the TRD Pro (the best choice, in my opinion) is worth about 41-43K (43 with all the add-ons).
So, there’s not a very big gap in the cost of the basic trims, as one could think. Five thousand dollars is serious money, but not if you’re about to buy your one and only truck. If you go for the TRD, the price will bump up a bit more, so, the difference will become more significant.
