You know what they say – the unchallenged king is the king of all. That has been the case with Toyota’s flagship Mid-Size truck, Tacoma, which is by far the most loved and most trusted pick-up truck in the automobile industry. For a very long time, Toyota has been the leader in the market, with little to no competition on the horizon. However, as of late, America’s own GMC decided to put the king’s abilities to the test, and, while they’re at it, maybe even take the crown as a trophy. Colorado and Canyon have been out of the game for a minute, but are finally back with some serious heat. As for Tacoma, it did get lazy and somewhat clumsy, but still holds the number one spot; and not only due to lack of proper competition. True, Toyota haven’t really invested into much changes in the last couple of years, but that’s only because they’re cooking up something big for the 2016-2017 model years: we’ve got the Atkinson-cycle engine and a completely new platform on the way. So, as you can see, the Japanese have been quite busy, trying to perfect their pride and joy. So, let`s talk about Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Chevrolet Colorado 2015 and the new challenges for the king.
America’s Finest vs The Japanese Leader
Obviously, Tacoma’s reign on top begged for a real challenge, and today, with GMC rolling out its biggest contestants onto the ring, you could almost feel the tension in the air. By many standards Chevrolet Colorado is a true match for the Toyota Tacoma. Others say that Canyon is the real deal, and is the proper rival for the Japanese heavyweight. Both claims are true, and today we’re gonna have a detailed Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Chevrolet Colorado 2015 comparison. But the battle between Canyon and Tacoma will also take place on my virtual ring – so, make sure to check back with me to keep up with the latest!
Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Chevrolet Colorado 2015 – What’s New?
The Chevrolet Colorado hasn’t been in top shape for a while, but is significantly better in the 2015 edition. Actually, it doesn’t have much in common with the previous models, like the 2004-2012 ones, and is a proud owner of a completely new powertrain, styling approach, a brand-new interior, and even some modern-day technological features that nobody would normally expect to see in a mid-size truck.
As for the 2015 edition of Toyota Tacoma, we’ve got only one big change this year – Toyota decided to replace last year’s TRD T/X Baja edition with the new TRD Pro.
As mentioned before, the real changes for Tacoma are yet to come, and, with the new platform and the introduction of the hybrid engine it could very well flip the game. But, that’s all gonna happen in the future. Today we have a Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Chevrolet Colorado 2015 competition, and the new kid on the block has all the necessary might to compete with the king. Or, at least, challenge him.
Who’s The Most Reliable?
Toyota’s brands – trucks especially – are known to be extremely reliable. According to the professionals at J.D. Power, the 2015 Toyota Tacoma is strong enough to get an honorable 4 in the Power Circle Rating, which is pretty great for a mid-size truck. The 2015 edition of the Chevrolet Colorado is relatively new on the market to get a rating. And I don’t recommend checking the statistics for the older models – that wouldn’t be a very good move, since it’s almost a complete redesign this year, and the numbers just won’t give you the right picture.
As for warranty, the Colorado has a small advantage in terms of warranty length. While both brands claim 3 years or 36K miles of coverage, Chevrolet’s truck offers five years or 100K miles of powertrain protection against Toyota’s same five years but 60K miles. Nevertheless, this round of the Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Chevrolet Colorado 2015 duel is kinda blurry, and I can’t really name either one of the trucks a winner, because no official information on the Colorado’s reliability is available yet.
Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Chevrolet Colorado 2015 – Interior
Interior-wise, Tacoma is a bit noisy – always have been – while the new Colorado is amazingly noise-proof. Inside, the new kid is a bit more comfy, with extra attention to the seats. To be honest, Toyota never paid too much attention to the comfort level of their famous truck, and that’s part of its charm, if you may. The thing with trucks is, you just want a wild beast, that’s great off-road, and is very reliable and dependable.
Fuel-Efficiency – MPG Comparison
Both trucks, in Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Chevrolet Colorado 2015 comparison provide a choice between two engines: a standard-level 4-cyl, and a more sophisticated V6. The Colorado’s standard 4-cyl is a 2.5-lit engine, capable of 200HP that provides about 27 miles per gallon on the highways. And 20 mpg if you like to roll around in the city. The 2015 Tacoma, on the other hand, comes packed with a standard 4-cyl, 2.7-lit engine, that provides 25 mpg hwy/21 city. But is significantly short on the horses – it’s got only 159HP.
The meat and potatoes of the truck world is, of course, the V6. It is available for both the Colorado and the Tacoma. And it’s probably gonna be the engine of choice for most buyers. Chevy’s beast delivers a staggering 305HP V6, which returns about 26 mpg hwy/18 mpg city. Tacoma is less effective with the V6 – it provides only 236 horsepower. It has fuel-efficiency of 21 hwy/17 city.
So, no second guessing here – Chevrolet’s monster is the clear winner of the powertrain round in the Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Chevrolet Colorado 2015 battle. It’s not only more fuel-efficient. It also has a more powerful V6 engine, that spews lots of horsepower.
Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Chevrolet Colorado 2015 – The Safety Systems
Because the 2015 Chevy Colorado is fresh-new, it has not yet been tested by the big players in the game – not by the nonprofit IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), nor the government’s NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Tacoma has been around for a while. So, the test results are available: the NHTSA awarded Toyota’s truck with a four-star rating, and the IIHS also had some very nice things to say about it.
However, in terms of safety precautions systems, the good-old Tacoma is somewhat behind its rival. The Colorado provides a wide range of all the modern-day technological features, such as a blind spot camera (that’s actually available for the Tacoma as well), plus the brand-new lane-departure warning system and the forward collision alert system. The Tacoma can’t boast having it. So, all in all, Colorado seems to be the winner of the Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Chevrolet Colorado 2015 safety round, and not only because of the modern tech, but also due to the expected excellence in the future crash tests, as it has a newer design.
As we just established, Chevy has a lot of advantages as regards to safety. Furthermore, it’s also more advanced in terms of equipment and technology, which is expected, as Tacoma has never really been one to chase all the trendy new techy features. Still, Toyota’s truck has all the necessary basics, including the company’s trademark Entune system and a JBL audio system. The Colorado, in turn, enjoys all of the brand-new developments. It including a very large and beautiful 8-inch display, on-board Wi-FI, and a transmission with tow/haul modes and auto grade braking. In point of fact, Tacoma is happy with its older and simpler approach and equipment, while the stylish new Colorado provides all the latest achievements and high-tech features.
Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Chevrolet Colorado 2015 – Who’s The Cheapest?
So, as we’ve just established, the competition is very stiff. The 2015 Colorado beats Tacoma in several rounds, but the Tacoma has a higher resale value. Keep that in mind. Plus, it’s superior off-road, and has that 110-volt outlet in bed. As for dimensions, the two trucks are pretty much the same, providing roughly identical leg and headroom, as well as cargo space. If you’re worried about having problems with parking – don’t. Both vehicles are pretty narrow for their class. They can squeeze into a tiny spot, if need be. Watch out for low garages, though, as the trucks are pretty tall.
A quick note: As of March 2015, Tacoma outsold Colorado 16K to 6,7K, and that’s a clear statement of customer commitment and quality. Yes, Colorado may have fancy new gadgets. And a bit of advantage on the MPG, but Tacoma is a classic, and represents everything that truck fans hold dear to heart.
And what about the price tags? The price for both trucks is, surprisingly enough, almost the same. The base access cab trim level of the 2015 Toyota Tacoma will cost you about 24K MSRP, and the double cab TRD PRO, packed with a 4.0-lit V6 and a 5-speed automatic is valued 39K MSRP. The 2015 Chevrolet Colorado will be yours for 26K MSRP (that’s the standard Crew cab Work truck trim level), and the highest trim level – Z71 – is available for 37K.
So, there you have it – a detailed comparison of the two mid-size trucks. As I often like to say, there’s no definite triumphant in this battle. The Toyota Tacoma 2015 vs Chevrolet Colorado 2015 is a very tense and entertaining rivalry, but the winner is not absolute – everybody gotta pick the heroes by their own tastes. If you’re a fan of everything new and techy, plus good MPG is really important to you, then you should choose Chevy’s new truck. And if you’re one for reliability, off-road performance, and class, then you must pick the 2015 Toyota Tacoma.
