Have you ever been driving down the road with the top down, the music blazing and your favorite girl right next to you? Do you know what it feels like to have the world at your fingertips? I most certainly do, and I think of myself as lucky, blessed even. Convertible cars have been around for as long as I remember, and even back in the day they were considered to be the toys for the boys with thick wallets. If a car can “lose” the roof that means it’s either a sports car or a supercar, no other way around it. To tell you the truth, I can’t really see any logical explanation to why you should buy a convertible and not a “fully closed” car. I mean, you can’t drive it during winter (or any semi-cold time of the year), but the price-tag is still ridiculously steep. On the other hand, it’s all about the emotions, the drama, the moment…the wind in your hair, the titanic engine roaring, folks on the streets giving out Kudos – that’s priceless, if you ask me. In this article we’ll talk about the fastest convertibles on the market, the ones that can reach a top speed of 200+ miles per hour.
The Most Unpractical Pick On The Market
There’s a mighty bunch of those out there, so, I’ve compiled a list of the best of the best, the fastest, the best-looking and the most iconic no-roofers you can buy on this planet. As my girlfriend used to say back in the day, a convertible is a 100% guy thing: a high-performance, smooth, gorgeous car like that is one of the most unpractical purchases in the automobile industry. It’s like the ultimate money-burning machine, but if you’ve got the bucks, there’s no better way to spend them than on a garage full of breath-taking convertibles. That’s like the #1 rule of the bachelor life-style. Another fun fact: if you’re really all about speed, a hardtop would actually be a better pick, because the convertible roofs induce more drag into the body of the car, making it slower on the road. However, we are not logical creatures (not all the time, anyway), and are more than willing to sacrifice speed, acceleration and that bank account just to be able to drive one of the fastest convertibles on the market. Alright, let’s take a look at the heroes of the occasion.
#1 – The Ferrari 488 Spider
A Ferrari convertible! Man, what could possibly be better than this? Not much, really: the 488 is all-new and ready-to-rumble with a 23% more rigid body as compared to the outdated 458. Now, this supercar looks like it just drove down from the heavens to grace us with its presence. To be honest, I can’t quite understand how the designers and engineers over at Ferrari manage to make the next generation of mid-engined, V8-packed sports cars look as good as the last one. I’m suspecting they’re using some kind of Black magic for that, but then again, how does something evil look so great?! Critics all around the globe seem to be affected by this “spell” too, as they’re writing ecstatic, I would even say rhapsodic reviews on this beautiful piece of art – even the strictest folks from the old days. It takes a glimpse to understand that you’re in the presence of something truly fantastic, something worth working your ass off 24/7. The Ferrari 488 Spider comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.9-lit V8 that’s capable of 661 Horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain takes this supercar from zero to 62MPH in 3 seconds sharp and easily reaches a top speed of 200+ miles per hour. So, yeah, one of the fastest convertibles on the market, without a doubt. It’s set for a summer release with a starting price-tag of 275K – how about it, folks?
#2 – The Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce Roadster
It’s a tradition: whenever there’s a Ferrari car in the list of the best of the best, at least one Lambo has to also participate. These two are by far the greatest brands to ever do it, and the Superveloce Roadster is just what you’ve been looking for your whole life. It’s got more power, it feels greater on the road, and, thanks to a new diet, it’s also lighter and looks super-hot. This is the perfect formula for an ideal Italian go-getter, nothing more, nothing less. The new Lamborghini is equipped by a 6.5-lit V12 that’s good for whooping 750 Horsepower (that’s 50HP+ as compared to the standard Aventador) and 509 pound-feet of torque. The total weight is less than 3.4K pounds. On the race-track this supercar performs like it was born for it: you’ve got it flying from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.0 seconds and reaching a max speed of 217 miles per hour. Oh yeah, this is that big-boy stuff, that faster-than-light kind of speed. The Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce Roadster (aha, that’s one hell of a name!) is quite pricey, though: you’ll have to let go of half a mil to drive it (530K, to be exact). But it’s well worth it, and the ridiculous speed is not the only reason why it’s in the list of the fastest convertibles on the market. It looks gorgeous, too!
The Fastest Convertibles On The Market – The McLaren 650S Spider
McLaren used to hide in the shadows for a while, but in 2011 they returned with a mighty trump up their sleeve: the then-new MP4-12C showed the world that the Brits still know how to impress and took its well-deserved place among the kinds, the Lambo Gallardo and the Ferrari 458 – the best exotic cars on the market for God knows how long. However, that still wasn’t it for McLaren. When they took the 12C, changed the overall styling, added some awesome features from the P1 and packed it with a 650 Horses-strong engine, they created the 650S Spider – a dream-car in every possible way. Hey, that’s not even its strongest suit! You won’t believe this, but the Spider is constructed upon a super-lightweight one-piece Carbon MonoCell that weights only 176 lbs! I can’t wrap my head around it, but they did it. With that kind of powertrain and an unbelievably light body the McLaren 650S Spider goes from 0 to 60MPH in 3 seconds, while the top speed reaches 204 miles per hour. True, it’s still not as fast as the new Aventador, but it’s pretty damn close. Besides, the starting price-tag on this one is far more appealing: 350K.
#4 – The Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible
Two Italians, two Englishmen – it’s only fair! Bentley has always been about that class, you know, the one that comes with a big “C”. In terms of luxury this major is far ahead of the game, and can’t nobody touch them. If you make a list of all the greatest luxury features/equipment known, I bet the Continental GT Speed Convertible will have it. Besides, it looks gorgeous from outside, too, with that handsome, profound front-end. Under the hood the new Bentley is hiding one of the strongest powertrains on the market, a twin-turbocharged 6.0-lit V12 that’s capable of 626HP and 685 pound-feet of torque. It’s AWD (all-wheel drive) and paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This mighty-mighty setup takes the Continental GT from standstill to 60MPH in healthy 4 seconds (you’ve got a max speed of 206MPH). And that makes it one of the fastest convertibles on the market that money can buy. It’s exceptionally good-looking, stylish, tech-packed, luxurious and, obviously, fast. As for the price, Bentley is – strangely enough – the most affordable pick from today’s list with a starting tag of 242K. Bentley = affordable? Nah, I’m just kidding!
The Fastest Convertibles On The Market – #5, The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse
I’m ashamed to say, but, until recently, I had no idea that Bugatti was a French company! I mean, if it was a question of life and death I would say it’s Italian…or British, at least. But French? Well, now I know, and that makes the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse that much more impressive for me. To beat the greatest at their own game you gotta pack a mean punch. Well, I don’t know about mean, but the kick was pretty strong – so much so that the team behind the Veyron made it the fastest convertible car on the market! It goes from zero to 60 miles per hour in 2.4 seconds and is capable of 270MPH! That’s about 230-250 with the top down (the estimates aren’t really clear, as there’s this electronic system that limits the max speed). The gorgeous Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse is powered by an 8.0-lit V16 that’s good for stronger-than-Thor 1200 Horsepower and 1106 pound-feet of torque. It’s AWD, mated to a 7-speed auto clutch transmission. Alright, ladies and gentlemen, that’s about it for the fastest convertibles on the market. Drive safe and praise the convertibles!
