Time flies, my friends, that’s a well-known fact. Yesterday you were a kid, two hours ago you were a college boy, and today you’re a grown man, responsible for your family and for your house. And even though you can’t protect your kids from everything bad that’s going on in this world (bullies at school, difficulties of teenage life, social media), that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. A good parent always worries about their kids and tries to do everything in his/her power to keep their children safe. Now, given the fact that pretty much EVERY SINGLE American family has at least 2 vehicles in the garage (an SUV and a compact car, or a hybrid and a mid-size/full-size sedan), car safety is yet another thing you gotta take care of today. Let’s see the Greatest Family Vehicles From Ford.
Thankfully, the majors in the automobile industry did that for you, and the modern line-ups boast exceptional crash-test ratings and all kinds of safety equipment/features. Next, you gotta think about affordability, interior space, and comfort, tech-savvy, fuel-efficiency and reliability. Well, as you can probably get from the title – the greatest family vehicles from Ford – in this article we’ll focus on the economic side of the deal, the affordable cars to take care of you and your loved ones.
A Family Car Doesn’t Mean Boring Anymore
Yep, forget about those fancy muscle cars or the European sports cars – you’re a family man now and need to think accordingly :). Let’s clear out one thing, though: despite the fact that a hauler is not really supposed to be (or feel) cool, the modern-day models do try to appeal to a wider audience, and thus, even the most low-budget and boring vehicles boast attractive looks. Fun fact: even though most of us think that the Japanese brands are the leaders when it comes to the middle-class (with Toyota being the obvious leader), the US-made cars are actually not that far behind, or maybe even ahead of the game. That’s why today we’ll talk about the greatest family vehicles from Ford: I want to show you (or, rather, tell you) that we, the Americans, know a thing or two about how to make your cruisin’ time with your wife and the kids a most enjoyable thing. Bottom line is, if you’re looking for a brand-new (or pre-owned, whatever works for you) family car, the Blue Oval Brand got you covered. Hands down, they’ve got one of the best SUVs, sedans and compact cars on the market right now. Even if you’re the pickiest person on the planet and can’t seem to find your ideal vehicle, I’m sure you’ll love at least one model from my list. Let’s go shopping!
#1 – The Ford Flex
If you’re a lucky father/mother to a large family and love to flex around the block, the Ford Flex is an ideal pick. First of all, it can easily take in as much as 6 or even 7 passengers (depends on the configuration you go with). Plus, it’s super-generous with interior space, meaning even the tallest folks will feel comfortable in those back seats. True, the material quality and finishing might not be as cutting edge as in the other models from Ford’s line-up, but, when it comes to that powertrain, this boxy-shaped champ delivers, big time: the entry-level 3.5-lit V6 engine is capable of 287 Horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque, while the optional turbocharged 3.5-liter (EcoBoost) pumps out impressive 365HP and 350 lb-ft. of torque (available only with the Limited trim).
As for fuel-efficiency, the SUV returns 23 miles per gallon on the highway and 16MPG in the city (19MPG combined) with both setups. So, all of that definitely makes it one of the greatest family vehicles from Ford. Wait, that’s not all: the turbo V6 is pretty great with acceleration, too, and can jump from zero to 60 miles per hour in quick 6.2 seconds, which is like light speed for a family-friendly 3-row crossover SUV. Furthermore, if you equip it with the right package, the latest Flex will be able to tow anything up to 4.5K pounds. Finally, you’ve got tons of storage room, with the 2nd- and 3rd-row seats folding for you to store larger stuff in.
The Greatest Family Vehicles From Ford – #2, The Ford Edge
This is yet another gorgeous 5-seater for couples with 3 kids – welcome the smooth and sexy Ford Edge, available in 4 trim levels, including the entry-level SE, SEL, Titanium and the ultimate trim – Sport. Obviously, the last 2 come pretty-well packed, with all of the latest technological features, safety equipment, and that fancy stuff. However, there’s a catch, meaning the price-tags on those babies might not be a fit for your family-friendly wallet: The Titanium will cost you 35.6K, while the Sport trim can be yours for “just” 40.4K.
The good thing is you don’t necessarily have to go with the higher levels, and even the standard SE will be more than capable of keeping you safe, tech-packed, comfy and happy. As for the engines, you’ll get to choose between a small fleet: the first 3 trims come standard with a turbocharged 2.0-lit 4-cyl unit, good for 245HP and 275 lb-ft of torque. The SEL and Titanium owners get to drive with a 3.5-lit V6 under the hood, capable of 280 Horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. Finally, the Sport edition boasts a turbocharged 2.7-lit V6 that puts out class-leading 315HP and 350 lb-ft of torque. Fuel-efficiency is decent throughout the line-up, too. Add in impressive cargo capacity (39.2 feet with the back seats up and 73.4 with them folded down) and an “expensive” interior/cabin, and you’ll get one of the greatest family vehicles from Ford.
#3 – The Ford Explorer
If you love exploring with style and swagga, this good-looking SUV is just what the doctor ordered. The Explorer can seat 6 to 7 passengers without even breaking a sweat and can easily tow your favorite boat/trailer (or both) as long as it doesn’t weight more than 5K pounds. Again, you’ve got 4 trims to choose from, with the starting price-tag on the entry-level trim around 31K. Moving up the ladder you’ve got the XLT Trim (33.4K), Limited (41.3K), Sport (43.5K) and Platinum (53K). Obviously, you don’t have to spend all of your life savings on the ultimate trim just because it comes with all the latest tech, features and exceptional material quality (not to mention a mighty powertrain).
The beautiful thing about the modern-day market is you’ll be perfectly fine with the entry-level model, which is quite fairly-priced, considering what you’ll be getting for that price (a pretty awesome family hauler, to be exact). The 3.5-lit V6 that comes standard is good for 290HP and 255 lb-ft of torque and returns 24 miles per gallon on the highway and 17MPG in the city (20MPG combined). On the race-track the basic Explorer sprints from zero to 60 miles per hour in 8.4 seconds. True, that’s nowhere close to the Flex, but come on, who cares about acceleration in a family-friendly vehicle, right? Regardless, it’s a great investment for your money, period.
The Greatest Family Vehicles From Ford – #4, The Ford Expedition
Finally, let’s talk about that big-boy stuff. Yep, I mean the Ford Expedition, a full-size SUV, perfect for large families, capable of seating up to 8 folks simultaneously. Starting price on this monster is around 41K, with the ultimate trim – EL – coming with a hefty price-tag of 63K (yep, I told you it’s for the grown-ups only). The thing with full-sizers is you gotta know for sure that you need one, otherwise, there’s no point in paying those additional 10 to 15 grand just to say that you own it. True, the brand-new 2016 Expedition IS one of the greatest family vehicles from Ford, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessary for you, get it? With that said, I have to compliment the SUV on the fact that it’s surprisingly fun to drive and doesn’t feel like a modern-day steel dinosaur, even though it is as big and strong as a T-Rex. Engine-wise, you’ve got a turbocharged 3.5-lit V6 as the sole pick, but it’s more than capable of doing the job. It’s good of 365 Horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque and can tow anything up to 9.2K. And it’s quite the sprinter, too, jumping from 0 to 60 in 6.5 seconds.
